On journalism in Israel and Lebanon

There's been a tremendous variety of stories in the media recently regarding how journalism is being done in Israel and Lebanon. Der Spiegel recently wrote pieces about journalists' complicity with the Israeli PR machine and Hezbollah's methods of silence and control in showing Lebanon to journalists (and intimidation of journalists who try to work outside of Hezbollah's control). Also the subject of an article on CJR Daily, and another about how journalists have become targets and tools of war in the Middle East. Der Spiegel also shows how both sides are using YouTube to distribute propaganda (in case you don't know the language, click on the red words). via the excellent Conscientious.

Rush Limbaugh seems to have weighed in on pictures coming from Lebanon, though the link is to a second-hand account of what he said, so that's really just gossip.

Meanwhile, the New York Times' Tyler Hicks describes his experience in Lebanon for NPR and Polaris' Scout Tufankjian describes how she works in Gaza for Slate.com. Small controversy about her methods on lightstalkers.org.

There's already been some controversy over pictures from the conflict. Here is a decent rundown, with input from AP photographer Sebastian Scheiner who took them, about the pictures of young Israeli girls writing messages on artillery before it's aimed at Lebanon. The Guardian has more information about how the blogosphere has used and reacted to these pictures.

Also, there's a comparison of the last pre-violence covers of entertainment magazines Time Out: Beirut and Time Out: Tel Aviv. via BoingBoing.net.

Whew.
