Words of Wisdom
When people ask me how they can become a photographer, I almost never mention cameras, lenses, or technique.
I say, ‘If you want to be a photographer, first leave home.’ As Paul Theroux, a great writer and friend, further advises, “Go as far as you can. Become a stranger in a strange land. Acquire humility.
Leaving home really means that the photographer (or writer) has to wander, observe, and to paraphrase Theroux, concentrate on people in their landscape. That is what I try to achieve in my pictures.
Steve McCurry is now blogging, and offering up some words of wisdom on life and photography.

I like how photography and writing are mentioned, because although they’re two different things, the same concept is applied to both. You can put this concept to whatever your passion is. Truly Words of Wisdom.

I admire Steve McCurry and his work but I think that is horrible advice to young photographers. It is much easier to make interesting compelling images of exotic people in exotic places. To truly master your craft, you must be able to find the extraordinary in the ordinary.
